Crypte Sainte-Catherine VR

Virtual Reality Experience

PROBLEMS :

  • In 2021, Hand Tracking 2.0 wasn’t available yet on Quest 2.

  • I needed a simple interaction system so that even novices in VR, regardless of age, could easily jump into the experience.

  • I wanted users to live something, be part of the experience and not only 3D visiting.

SOLUTIONS :

  • I used only one controller and one button.

  • I implemented ray casting and layer-based interactions: players could press "A" to interact with the environment (grab objects, climb ladders).

  • I gave them a huge hammer so they could smash the modern walls and become the archaeologist that reveals the past.

High Concept

The Crypte Sainte-Catherine VR is a historical VR experience where players, as archaeologists, break modern walls (with a huge hammer) and scan the environment to uncover and explore the crypt as it once was.

My Work

I help with historical researches and created the core concept: an active/immersive discovery rather than a passive tour.

I developed the VR prototype with a simple one-button design, and learned to build for Meta Quest 2 despite limited tools.

Before handoff, I cleaned the project and helped wrote and complete Game Design Document and Technical Design Document to ensure continuity.

Conclusion

This first VR project taught me how to turn a concept into a playable experience, even under technical and time constraints.

Fun fact: Began to dream about solutions for a technical problem, came to work the next day, dreamed solutions appeared to be true and I fixed the problem!
